Motivated by Seth's post on the difference between PR and Publicity, I excavated this juicy marketing quote from a vintage Brand Autopsy post (circa May 6, 2005).
”Advertising is when you tell people how great you are.
PR is when someone else says how great you are.”
— Guy Kawasaki —
THE MACINTOSH WAY
(HarperPerennial reprint, 1990)
I really like Seth's post about getting to the root of the issue. That quote goes along great with his post. Great find (excavation?).

So true. It is more than just about the number of eyeballs that are reached. PR is about being strategic; having a story and plan for delivering it to the desired audience in the right forums. Publicity does serve a purpose for the right situation, mainly when the main and only objective is to create awareness.

Great quote! @Phil, Advertising is also strategic. Great marketing reaches consumers through the right method and the right time. It's "AdverTrying" with your brand to get the best impact. Much like PR, but the focus as Guy says, is different.

Great point. I believe people are becoming more and more skeptical of traditional advertising. PR is an excellent opportunity to reach people.

PR is when you pay someone else to say how great you are, or to put you in a position to tell others how great you are. "Enough about me. Now, you write a story about how great I am".
