Despite Big Box retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy accounting for 65% of all CDs purchased, these retailers are reducing their CD selling space. An interesting, but not surprising, paradox. In the article, a Best Buy executive smartly quips, “Music has become a commoditized item. The CD is perceived by the consumer to be a $10 item, and the manufacturers continue to release new titles at $15 to $18.98.” This Best Buy executive goes on to suggest music labels should release no-frills packaged CDs priced to sell and release more deluxe packaged CDs for die-hard fans.
