UPDATED | March 28, 2006 ... I’ve closed comments to this post because of the derivative comments from people plugging their copycat version of the milliondollarhomepage. Since nothing worthwhile was being added to the conversation, I’ve elected to close comments. Sorry. I hope you understand.
Alex Tew brings new meaning to CPP (cost per pixel) and new relevancy to the Law of Remarkability. At milliondollarhomepage.com, Tew sells advertising by the pixel. He divides a computer display screen in 10,000 squares selling advertising by the pixel at $1 per pixel (100 pixel minimum).
Launched in late August 2005, Tew has sold $712,000+ in advertising and milliondollarhomepage.com gets anywhere from 600,000 to 700,000 hits per month. For more on the remarkability of Alex Tew’s idea, read this Wall Street Journal article.
I think it's the biggest idea in advertising for the year 2005. You may want to read my take on it as well.

Wow. Sometimes things like this make me want to cry, as I pay off my thousands of dollars of school debt 20.00 at a time. But, I must commend him on a good idea!!!

The milliondollar home page is being adapted by everyone, including me on my webpage marketed exclusively to the care home industry in London, United Kingdom.

My hat goes off to Alex Tew, he certainly found a unique idea to sell ad space. I actually took his idea one step further... selling ad space by the BYTE! There are so many "pixel pushers" out there now that I needed to put a spin on the pixel advertising concept. Check out www.buckabyte.com

When will the madness end? Actually I am just jealous because I did not think of the idea. I would love to turn in my low paying teaching job for a million dollar idea. Maybe I need to start brainstorming.

So how much do you guys think will Alex fetch for those ‘last 1000 pixels’ he has up on eBay right now? As I write this, his auction is already at $21,400, and there’s still almost 9 days to go! Amazing, and -as is this whole ‘pixel sites adventure’- SO inspiring!

The thousands of copy-cats that appeared after milliondollarhomepage
made it big won't get too far since the idea of selling pixels is no
longer novel! But now this site has popped up:
Claiming to "change the way advertising works", OnlyOneAd.com is
selling only one ad. That's right, there is only space for ONE ad
on the page. The first ad costs $1. To replace the ad, the next
advertiser must pay $2. After that, it costs $4, and so on. Each
new ad costs twice the amount of the previous ad. That means the
21st ad costs over one million dollars. The creator seems convinced
he can reach his goal, which actually seems possible if he can
generate enough buzz. He's keeping a detailed blog, and so far only
the 1st ad has sold for $1! How is this going to turn out?

I think Alex's idea is great - but it has to do with 100% how you market the idea. There have been many, many sites that have taken form over night, but if these sites have no means of marketing their goods - it leaves them with the rest of the pack.
That leads me to my attempt, but not to make a million dollars, but to validate and quantify the online marketing efforts moving forward. I have started http://www.ebizproject.com to do just that.
Now, If I could only figure out how to market it :))

Since the whole purpose of these pixel sites are really to increase site traffic, how about this alternative... http://www.yourika.com/free-alexa-hits lets anyone using the Alexa ToolBar improve their site's Alexa ratings FREE!

The OnlyOnAd idea is novel, if it makes it to the 20th spot thats a cool mil right there, the 21st spot would make it $2M.
My bet is OOA deadends halfway, bringing in under $100k, which is more like what the Million Dollar Homepage really made ~ it's an affiliate advertising SCAM based on a ficticious income statement.
Check the source and snoop the most common advertisers.
Suckers.
Zen.

I think that most of the copy sites that are being done now are just ugly. no one wants to visit an ugly site. this is why we have built www.adsbythedollar.com. take a look its a clean and proffessional approach.

It looks like the milliondollar boy is at it again. Or is this just a political ploy by someone in the republican party? http://www.milliondollarbush.com
Posted by: Larry Rickter | January 09, 2006 at 12:34 AM
No, it's not someone in the Republican political party. It's everyone and there brother trying to duplicate what this kid has done in the U.K. The question is, I wonder who will get there first? Down Bush is another site trying to do the same thing.

Are we all copying an Idea or are we all just trying to make sure this new form of advertising sticks? if you look at any business who has done well for them self im sure you will find they have competitors doing the same stuff.

We have set up Rail Pixels www.railpixels.com to be The Million Visitor Homepage, the world’s first pixel marketing site for the rail industry.
10% of profits will be donated to The Railway Children, the charity helping runaway and abandoned children who live in and around the world's railway stations. Alex Tew’s The Million Dollar Homepage is our inspiration. His concept could be the basis for a re-think of web marketing that challenges costly banner ads, boring links pages & antiquated webrings.
Views / comments welcome.

1 City costs USD100 only?
Web Advertisement in New Way
There’s another new advertisement platform set up after Milliondollarhomepage.
The website called “Globe-Ad.com” now is promoting Map Ads, that’s you can put your ads on the cities in the map. Each city for ads costs USD100.
Our reporter had an interview with the web chief and asked how they came up with the idea to put ads on the map. “If the grip is ok for sale, then why not the map? Our cities on the map will also create value. The truth is that the density of cities on the map is less than the grip, so the ads are more obvious for people to click, and our map includes most countries in the world, it’s no doubt that our map ads, if not better than, is same eye-catching as the grip ads.
Again our reporter asked one of the chief Jackson about the difference between the map and grip.
J(Jackson): We focus on uniqueness and pointedness. Only one ad is allowed on one city. The whole web is classified by countries, and every country has M cities. If you purchase one city, you can put on your ads on this city. Because of the uniqueness, map ads are more effective than the grip. Also the map consists of all the countries in the world, leading to the visitor classification.
Ads owner usually chooses the city where their companies is located, so that it’s easier to advertise because most visitors are opt to browse first their country, living city with other counties and places they interested in as second.
R(Reporter): The grip website has its limit, that’s their business will stop one the the grips sold out. So what about your map ads? You know, cities are also countable.
J(Jackson): Our maps show the big and famous cities mostly, but we can add more cities with our customers’ requirement. Also we have time limit of 1 year for the ads service by every purchase. After the period, the ads owner can transfer the city or purchase again with priority. We may include more maps in order to increase the popularity and profit. And please know that our services are not limited in map, we can make use of the map to extent more business.
The Milliondollarhomepage shocks the world with its creative grip ads. So in the same way, Map Ads is supposed to be the extent of the grip economy. They don’t rely on the portals with much information, but a tradition-breaking creative idea. The trend of future internet is leaded individuals, not traditional portals. As a result, the “Grip Economy”, “Map Economy” is somehow a breaking way leading Web 2.0 into practical and commercial use.

Jobless Boy Launches A Website To Sell 10,000 Jeans On The Internet!
USA jobless boy has set his sights on earning himself a million dollars after thinking of a simple idea of selling brands new and used jeans on his homepage MoneyOrBox.com
He had been thinking of ideas on how to make a little extra money for himself but some of his ideas either never worked out or were just far too ambitious.
So far there are 28 jeans sold on the homepage which has netted him just $1300 but as visitors grow and more people hear about the site, no doubt more jeans will be added and he will progress towards his target of 10,000 jeans on his homepage and one million dollars in the bank.
You can view the website by visiting www.MoneyOrBox.com

The original is obviously THE site to be held in history as the one upon which ignited this whole 'craze' of people trying to imitate it.
All of the copies are failing to innovate upon the original concept, just by offering different styles.
My site is the worlds first interactive pixel advertising style site, which encourages users to interact with the adverts. Alongside this it's also the worlds first tactical advertising game, so it's creating a whole new genre on it's own back and a new generation of pixel advertising.
To me, the original opened my eyes to ideas i've not had before which can be impemented and be successful.
