Can't buy that one Drucker quote: "the purpose of a business is to create a customer."
I like Drucker, but he slipped here.
The purpose of a business is to Meet the Needs of a customer. Not just create a customer. Dope dealers do that.
If all we had to do was create a customer, marketing would be a lot easier.
But to Care About a Customer, this is the newer perspective. "create customers" is 1950s mentality.
Mass production needed mass market, so mass media was created, not to entertain and inform but to mass sell.
Every good Marxist will tell you that.
But to Satisfy a Customer, pay attention to their needs, listen to their complaints, ask for their suggestions, implement their input, this is IT.
This is what blogs can facilitate.

I personally like this one:
"The best way to predict the future is to create it."
Tell's you everything about strategy and effectiveness. Everything else is a derivative if you stick to this.

"the purpose of a business is to create a customer."
I tend to disagree with your assessment of this quote, I think it is right on. I don't know many people who start businesses just to meet the needs of their customers since they do not have customers to begin with until that business is began. You start a business to meet your own needs first, and in order to do that you have to create a customer base to "feed" the business with revenue. Customer service is a consequence of having that business, a tool even to gain more customers and retain existing customers. Offer a good product you get a customer, offer a good product with great service you gain a loyal customer.

I have read that same quote somewhere as "the purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer", which covers both points.
